AJ Simon, vaunted UAlbany pass rusher, dead at 25
Sad news coming from the University at Albany football program. The university announced Wednesday that pass rusher Amitral “AJ” Simon has passed away.
"AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany,” the program said in a social media post. “He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years."
Simon had been preparing for the NFL draft. He recently participated at pro days just last month at the University at Buffalo and UAlbany.
The Tobyhanna, Pa., native was an instrumental part of the Great Danes FCS semifinal run. He recorded 12.5 sacks last season, which was the third most in the nation.
In a social media post, head coach Greg Gattuso said he had two joyous years coaching and becoming friends with Simon.
"My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family,” Gattuso said. "I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8."
Last season, Simon earned All-CAA first-team honor and was named first-team All-American by FCS Football Central. He started his collegiate career at Division II Bloomsburg University before transferring to UAlbany in 2022.
There’s no official word on the cause of death. Simon was 25.
