All Hope is Not Lost for a Potential Lovecraft Country Season Two

Lovecraft Country wrapped up its first season Sunday night on HBO, delivering another hour of the show’s signature blend of hellfire, some form of ritualistic sacrifice, and some cool-as-hell sci-fi surprise. (Bionic arm!) Oh, and monsters. Lots of monsters.

Yes, our heroes make out pretty good in the end—Leti defeats Christina, Dee, um, really defeats Christina, and Ji-Ah heroically comes back to save the day. It all comes at the expense of Tic, though, who actually does die, which still felt surprising even if it was forecasted to us for so long.

Will there be a Season Two of Lovecraft Country?

So far, HBO hasn’t announced any official plans for more episodes of Lovecraft Country. Which isn’t a total surprise. For one, there’s the coronavirus pandemic, which has thrown any and all plans for networks like HBO in flux. Two, Lovecraft Country’s source material (Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel of the same name) only amounts to eight interconnected short stories, so there’s little material to mine for future horror yarns. No need to lose hope, though. When making the postgame rounds to the Season One finale, Misha Green hinted multiple times at the possibility of a Season Two.

“With the finale I wanted to bring the arc of the first season to a close, while opening a door to the next,” Green told . “In the writer’s room we talked a lot about what ‘full circle’ looks like for each character, and then set out to do that in a surprising, yet satisfying way. I think it’s up to the audience to decide if we succeed, and hopefully they will.”

When talking to , Green even suggested that the Lovecraft Country team even already has a direction in mind for Season Two—but wouldn’t divulge anything more than that.

“I think that one of the things that was really exciting for me in season one, and working with HBO PR, was really trying to keep every episode as much of a surprise as possible and to let the audience get to go in and experience it,” she said. “And I feel the same way about Season Two. There's definitely a path forward that we have, but I definitely want to keep it close to the vest.”

What would a Season Two of Lovecraft Country be about?

Since it seems like Green and co. already have some ideas for the future of Lovecraft Country in mind, what would a Season Two of the series even look like, given all the character deaths in the finale?

Well, first of all, this is a show that heavily incorporates magic, spells, and various acts of sorcery. So, hey, one possibility: Tic is magically resurrected in Season Two, Episode One, meets back up with Leti and Montrose, a new big bad is introduced, then we’re back in business. (Maybe it’s even Leti who does the resurrecting, with her brand-new powers.) Lovecraft Country could end up going in an entirely new direction, and follow up with its Dee tease in the finale. That way, the show would focus on Dee, who could roll around the world of Lovecraft Country with the shoggoth, busting up baddies like Christina.



Or, in what might be a more likely scenario, Lovecraft Country will go the way of what so many people had hoped Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen would go: The anthology format. Given Lovecraft Country’s penchant for the “monster of the week” format—essentially telling a beginning-to-end story each episode—fans have that we could see a brand-new cast take on the cthulhu-ridden world in Season Two. If that’s the case, you could see Lovecraft Country making a time jump, exploring the after-effects of the Braithwhite-free world Tic and Leti changed for the better.
