AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Boy Scouts of America announced after 114 years, it will change its name to Scouting America.

“What we want to do is change that name to eliminate any perception that it’s just for boys. Our values haven’t changed. The scout oath and scout law haven’t changed. It’s the exact same, all we’ve done is hopefully provide that open door to all families to know it’s Scouting America,” said Brian Tobler, scout executive and CEO at Golden Spread Council.

The change aims to be more inclusive and acknowledge the organization’s commitment to offer scouting opportunities to all youth, regardless of gender.

The local chapter, Golden Spread Council, currently has about 2,000 members with 30 percent being girls.

“Whenever people ask me if I’m in Boy Scouts, they get really confused because it’s called Boy Scouts, but they let girls in back in 2019. I think this name change will hopefully help because now it won’t be so confusing, and now people are more aware that girls are allowed to be in Boy Scouts,” said Paige Tobler, troop leader at Golden Spread Council.

The name change will officially take effect on February 8, 2025.
