Brighton, who turned up rather angry to this one for some reason, made a good start to the game, and threatened with a couple early forays forward, with Đorđe Petrović watching an attempt miss the net by just a couple inches at one point.

But Chelsea settled down after a somewhat hectic start, and looked to have won a penalty when Diego Buonanotte tripped Marc Cucurella in the area. But VAR overturned the decision, and replays seemed to show that Buonanotte did in fact just get his toe to the ball first.

Brighton’s VAR “luck” then continued when Tariq Lamptey escaped any punishment for absolutely leveling Mykhailo Mudryk (who would have to leave with a concussion), while Nicolas Jackson saw a goal ruled out for a supposed push on Lamptey.

Thankfully, Cole Palmer was able to produce a wonderful header from a Cucurella cutback just past the half-hour mark to give us a lead to take into half-time.

The second half ramped up the drama, this time without any VAR involvement, as the two sides traded wasting clear-cut opportunities: Joao Pedro and Gross at one end, Palmer and Jackson at the other.

Chelsea’s initial impetus then started ebbing away around the hour-mark, as Brighton started pushing higher and higher, but thankfully we were able to produce a bit of proper quality on the counter, with Gusto picking out Nkunku at the penalty spot and the substitute making no mistake to double our lead.

But just when it looked like we would make it to the end without further refereeing controversy, Brighton’s goalkeeper was not sent off for a last-man challenge on Jackson running through, then VAR sent off James for leaving a leg in on Joao Pedro, who had tripped him from behind. Petulant, sure, but hardly dangerous especially compared to the Lamptey on Mudryk incident in the first half that didn’t even get a review.

With ten minutes also added on, Brighton made their numerical superiority count with Danny Welbeck scoring against us yet again.

Chelsea were able to hang on from there with some desperate defending. Sixth place here we come!
• Just one change from the weekend, with Gusto coming in at right back. Chalobah and Badiashile in the middle with Silva dropping out.
• Mudryk forced off with a concussion: an absolute joke of a decision not to give even a foul on that, let alone a card of any color
• Palmer’s 22nd of the season, second in the league only to Erling Haaland
• Nkunku with his third of this injury-hit season
• Gusto also seemed to pick up a knock at the end of the half, cited in his eventual substitution by the broadcast commentary
• some absolutely hilarious refereeing in this one; also, [FUN] VAR
• Chelsea move up to sixth, with Manchester United beating Newcastle today! Guaranteed at least seventh now, and sixth with a point on the final day.
• Next up: last game of the season, at home against Bournemouth
