Broadway Actress And Singer Marva Hicks Dies

According to an official press release from her representative, Hicks passed away on Friday (Sept. 16). A family statement was also issued to remember the award-winning actress and singer.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our dear Marva Hicks Taha. Our beloved wife, family member and friend will be greatly missed and remains marvelous in our hearts forever. The love she had for her husband, family, friends and entertainment community knew no bounds. We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love. Thank you for your compassion and prayers," said her husband, Akwasi Taha, and her family.

Originally from Petersburg, Virginia, Hicks made her Broadway debut in 1981 after graduating from Howard University. Her talents led her to appear on the Great White Way in Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music; The Lion King; Caroline, or Change; and the 2013 production of Motown the Musical.

During the span of her four-decade career, Hicks also received three Helen Hayes Awards and lent her voice to the Broadway Inspirational Voices. Her debut album Marva Hicks was released in 1991 and her hit single “Never Been in Love Before,” was a Top 10 charting record.

She also shared the stage with Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder while touring internationally.

Hicks also played Remy on Mad About You and appeared in shows like Madam Secretary, One Life to Live, Star Trek: Voyager and L.A. Law.

Her most recent performance was in April 2022 when she appeared in Angry, Raucous and Shamelessly Gorgeous at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia.
