ARLINGTON, Tex. (FORT WAYNE'S NBC) - In a surprising mid-season move, the Dallas Cowboys have released former Pro Bowl linebacker Jaylon Smith.

Smith shined as an All-American with Bishop Luers, before winning the College Dick Butkus Award, as the nation's top linebacker, at Notre Dame.

Smith is still owed $7.2 million from the Cowboys, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The 2016 2nd round pick signed a five year, $63.75 million extension just two years ago.
