Cubs Trade Anthony Rizzo to Yankees, Twitter Reacts
Cubs fans emotional in reactions to Rizzo trade originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Cubs traded Rizzo to the New York Yankees, NBC Sports Chicago's Gordon Wittenmyer confirmed Thursday night.
And as you may imagine, Cubs fans are emotional seeing Rizzo, a franchise cornerstone and the longest-tenured player on the roster, leave the club.
Anthony Rizzo was my favorite baseball player on my favorite team. He has been the heart and soul of the team for almost a decade and delivered a World Series to Cubs fans. I am, to put it quite simply, totally devastated to see him traded. He gave his all to us. I love him. — sarah (@slwein) July 29, 2021
Anthony Rizzo changed my life. I dreamt every day of the Cubs winning a World Series, and Anthony led us there.
At this moment, aside from hoping he comes back in the spring, all I hope is that he knows how much we love him and what he means to Cubs fans. — Corey Freedman (@CFCubsRelated) July 29, 2021
Many fans are thanking Rizzo for helping bring a World Series title to the North Side back in 2016.
My Dad and I are in the last picture before Anthony Rizzo caught the final out for the Cubs to win the 2016 World Series. I’ll treasure this forever. Thank you so much for everything you have done for the Chicago Cubs, you deserved better than this @ARizzo44 pic.twitter.com/wmx3EmRnSg — Josh (@IHateLettuce2) July 29, 2021
For others, the thought of Rizzo in Yankees pinstripes makes them feel unwell.
If you're wondering what that looks like...
Others are already plotting for Rizzo to return as a free agent this winter.
Ohers are upset Rizzo didn't get an at-bat Thursday, so fans to give him a final ovation at Wrigley Field, in case of a trade. Rizzo and Bryant, another likely trade candidate, sat out of Thursday's loss to the Reds.
