Dak Prescott’s brother, Dez Bryant and others react to Cowboys’ inability to strike long-term deal with QB

The deadline for Dak Prescott to sign a long-term extension with the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday came and went with no agreement in place.

The Cowboys quarterback, heading into his fifth year leading the offense, will play the 2020 season on the exclusive franchise tag valued at $31.4 million.

Prescott signed his franchise tender on June 22, with hopes that continuing negotiations would still lead to an extension in Dallas this offseason. However, Prescott’s representatives and the Cowboys’ front office were able to hammer out a deal before the 3 p.m. deadline.

After news of the non-extension came through, Prescott’s brother, Tad, took to Twitter to voice his displeasure with the outcome.

“There is a reason I was never a @dallascowboys fan growing up or before they drafted @dak after today, who knows how much longer I’ll be cheering for them,” Tad Prescott tweeted.

Later in the evening, former teammate Dez Bryant also took to Twitter to voice his opinion on the situation.

“The Cowboys never had a problem paying their QBs,” Bryant said. “For people saying Dak in control shut up.”

Here’s how other local and national media reacted to the two sides’ inability to get Prescott’s extension done:

A breakdown of contract negotiations between the Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott, as reported by The Dallas Morning News:

July 2019: The Cowboys presented Prescott with a proposal that averaged $30 million and a guarantee of $90 million entering training camp, putting him among the top five players at the position at that time.

September 2019: In an effort to strike a deal before the regular season began, the club upped that offer to an average of $33 million with a guarantee of close to $105 million.

February or March 2020: The team offered a deal that bumped the average above $34 million with a guarantee of above that of Wentz.

April 2020: The latest offer averaged roughly $34.5 million with a guarantee slightly above $110 million for five years.

June 22, 2020: Prescott signed the exclusive franchise tag, which carries a $31.409 salary for the 2020 season. It also contractually obligates him to report for training camp.

July 15, 2020: The 3 p.m. deadline to negotiate a long-term deal passed, and Prescott will become only the third quarterback in NFL history to play under the franchise tag (Drew Brees, Kirk Cousins).
