FLINT, MI -- Flint native and actor Terry Crews is getting both support and blistering criticism for a Twitter message that says in part, “We must ensure #blacklivesmatter doesn’t morph into #blacklivesbetter.”

More than 10,000 Twitter users commented and more than 40,000 users liked Crews’ tweet within four hours of it having posted Tuesday, June 30.

In the full tweet, Crews said people shouldn’t elevate Black lives over all other races.

“If you are a child of God, you are my brother and sister. I have family of every race, creed and ideology,” he began the message before commenting on the Black Lives Matter movement, which has become more prominent in the discussion of public policy reforms following the deaths of Black men and women after encounters with police.

Among the comments on the tweet, @Being_Melody advised Crews, “Gah. You could have left out that last sentence. No one wants to be better. We want to be treated fairly and equal.”

@exavierpope replied, “Terry Crews, income, education, technology gaps will take TRILLIONS and DECADES to flip to even getting remotely close to equality. Look at the ownership of our corporations, infrastructure. Time value of money on investments on backs of institutionalized racism. You’re ignorant.”

Crews, 50, is the host of “America’s Got Talent.” He spent several years in the NFL, but is best known for his acting work. He stars in the sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and is also known for roles on the TV shows “Everybody Hates Chris” and “Are We There Yet?” He has appeared in comedies like “Idiocracy,” “Friday After Next,” “White Chicks” and “The Longest Yard.”
