Grammys 2023: Harry Styles wins album of the year, Samara Joy takes best new artist

Harry Styles won album of the year for “Harry’s House” but the 65th Grammy Awards‘ biggest winner might have been the super fan who got to announce the award and hand him the trophy.

The Grammys this year picked a group of fans to discuss why their favorite artist deserved to win Grammys, and before this final award of the night was handed out, host Trevor Noah invited them all to come on stage, joking, “This is the first time you’re going to get on stage without getting chased by security.”

When Noah opened the envelope, he scanned the fans behind him and approached the woman who’d advocated for Styles, a 78-year-old Canadian great-grandmother named Reina, and told her to announce the result.

“H-h-harry Styles!” she managed to get out as the crowd started to cheer and applaud Styles, who on reaching the stage gave her a hug and a kiss and pretty much made her year in that moment.

“Man, I’ve been so, so inspired by every artist in this category with me at a lot of different times in my life,” Styles said after a few introduction bleeps by the CBS censors. “I listen to everyone in this category when I’m alone.

“This doesn’t happen to people like me very often and this is so, so nice,” he added before handing the microphone off to his two collaborators and stepping over to fist-bump the fan who’d backed him all night.

Moments earlier, best new artist awarad went to jazz vocalist Samara Joy.

I am so so –,” Joy began before becoming briefly overwhelmed. “Oh my gosh, I’ve been watching y’all on TV for so long. So to be with you, born and raised in the Bronx, New York, my family here. All of you are so inspiring to me.”
