Parts of the Big Island of Hawaii are under a *blizzard warning*!

The mountain summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are under a blizzard warning through Saturday for wind gusts up to 100 mph and a foot of snow! A wild storm system is impacting the Hawaiian Islands right now and will continue all the way through Tuesday. A flood watch is in effect until at least 7 p.m. HT Tuesday, December 7th for the potential of closed roads due to flooding.

Regarding the blizzard warning, it’s the first time the National Weather Service in Honolulu issued one in three and a half years! The last instance of a blizzard warning was in March of 2018. In fact since the early 2000’s only 7 blizzard warnings have been issued have been issued by NWS Honolulu.

A massive, sprawling weather system in the Pacific Basin is currently swirling over the Hawaiian Islands, bringing colder air and heavy precipitation. Stay safe from the strong wind by remaining inside during the windiest times of the day and night, as well as avoiding floodwaters to ensure safety from high water.
