How many rainouts have the Padres had at Petco Park?
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Rainouts are rare for Padres home games, and even rarer for opening weekend, but they can happen.
The Padres define a rainout as when the game is called due to inclement weather before it becomes an official game, which is after four-and-a-half innings of play (if the home team is ahead) or five full innings of play (if the home team is behind or if the game is tied).
In the team’s history, there have been a total of 19 rainouts in San Diego. Of those, four rainouts have been at Petco Park since the ballpark opened in 2004.
The most recent rainout was just last year as a result of Tropical Storm Hilary. The game originally slated for Aug. 20 against the Arizona Diamondbacks was rescheduled to the previous day as part of a split doubleheader.
The only other Padres home opener series’ rainouts, ironically, both occurred against the Giants, including one game in 2006 and two in 1975.
Thursday’s Padres home opener against the Giants was a bright and sunny one; however, that most likely won’t be the case this weekend for the second half of the series.
Friday’s game should see similar weather to Thursday, but a storm is brewing for the games being played on Saturday and Sunday.
The timing of the rain looks to begin Saturday morning with heavier rain forecasted for Saturday afternoon and evening. Once the rain arrives, it’ll likely be widespread rain for a few hours with pockets of downpour.
A few on and off showers are expected Sunday as the core of the system hangs out over Southern California, so rain won’t be as consistent, but there are chances for thunderstorms that day.
Fans should be prepared with ponchos and extra layers.
