Some audiences would perhaps argue that finishing a new show’s first season on Netflix is becoming increasingly nerve-racking.

After becoming invested in fresh characters and immersive worlds, the concept of cancellation is rather intimidating. However, it’s almost always a possibility.

Last year, viewers were quick to hail Katie Cappiello’s new offering, Grand Army, which is loosely based on her 2013 play Slut: The Play.

Episodes arrived in October 2020 and hopes swiftly turned to another outing. However, things have been rather quiet since then. Well, until now, that is.

So, has Grand Army been renewed for season 2 or cancelled?
• It has officially been confirmed that the series is cancelled and there will be no season 2 at Netflix.

Variety first reported on the news, although officials are yet to clarify why the decision was made.

Considering that the critical reception of the first season was largely positive – it has held a 71% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s likely that the viewing figures simply didn’t warrant the streamer having more episodes greenlit.

In 2018, Netflix’s vice president of original programming, Cindy Holland, said during an event: “The biggest thing that we look at is, are we getting enough viewership to justify the cost of the series?”

For Grand Army, maybe this just wasn’t the case. After all, so many new series have been released and commissioned over the last year, so it’s also likely that Netflix have had to adapt, becoming stricter when it comes to deciding which shows to progress with.

The fans have their say

Inevitably, a number of the show’s devotees have flocked to Twitter to vent their frustrations and react to the bombshell.

Some have already expressed hopes that another service will pick it up.

Upon the series’ premiere, Maliq Johnson (who plays musician Jayson Jackson) offered his thoughts on the creator’s approach:

“Katie is really big on making it as authentic as possible. If there was a scenario where we felt like things would have gone differently for us in our own lives, she was very open to letting us tell her that.”

He added: “And if there was a way she could do it, she would put it in the show.”

It’s sure to be a blow to both the crew and the fans, but the #SaveGrandArmy hashtag is already circulating amongst audiences eager to see a continuation.
