It’s a real transformation Tuesday for Jada Pinkett Smith, who just debuted a freshly shaved head on Instagram and is rocking it. “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go,” she captioned the post, referring to her 22-year-old daughter Willow Smith. “BUT … my 50s are ‘bout to be divinely lit with this shed❣️😜.”

In the photo, Jada posed alongside Willow, who originally shared the photo on her Instagram writing, “💕🙏🏾.” Jada also shared a video that showed off all the angles of her new ‘do.

The Red Table Talk host, 49, has been open about her experience with hair loss in the past—it’s why she’s kept a short cut in recent years. “It was terrifying when it first started,” she admitted in a 2018 episode of the talk show. “I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, am I going bald?’”

“It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking in fear,” she added, because her hair has always been a big part of her identity. “Taking care of my hair has been a beautiful ritual, and having the choice to have hair or not,” she said. “And then one day to be like, ‘Oh my god, I might not have that choice anymore.’”

The actress said she consulted multiple experts and doctors to find the root of her shedding but came to zero conclusions. “I’ve gotten every kind of test there is to have,” she explained. “They don't know why.”

That’s when she knew she had to come to terms with it. And now that she has, other women who struggle with various forms of hair loss—including alopecia, a condition in which the body attacks its own hair follicles—are inspired by her boldness.

“I suffer from alopecia in the same spots...turned 50 last year. You have given me strength to do the same!!❤️❤️” one person commented under her post. “I have alopecia from a lack of thyroid and the meds I will have to take for the rest of my life. Only my husband and children have seen me without my wig. You are so brave !” another added.

“I’ve always wanted to do this,” another wrote. “You must feel so free.”
