Britney Spears’ younger sister Jamie Lynn has forged her own path in Hollywood as an actress and a country singer, but her involvement in maintaining her pop star sister’s conservatorship has long been rumoured. Last summer, Britney used her explosive testimony in court to call out her family’s misuse of her 13-year conservatorship.

That has led many to believe there is a rift between Brit and JL. In fact, to ring in 2022, Britney unfollowed her sister on IG. Now, with the release of Jamie Lynn's new book, Things I Should Have Said, Spears spoke today on Good Morning America to set the record straight. Her record, that is.

Declining to comment on her sister’s point of view or frame of mind, Jamie Lynn says, "I was happy," when asked how she felt about the dissolution of the 13-year conservatorship.

But she adds that she wasn’t sure at the time it was put in place what it was for, and denies having an active role in it.

"I was about to have a baby so I didn't understand what was happening nor was I focused on that. I was focused on the fact that I was a 17-year-old about to have a baby. I understand just as little about it then as I do now.”

"There was a time when my sister asked me, off her trust and will, if I would be the person that ensured her boys got what they needed. Whether she's in a conservatorship or not, that was a very normal thing I thought. Once I realized that, 'You know, she's in a conservatorship,' I just didn't want to be a part of it until maybe she was out of the conservatorship. There was no me overseeing funds or something like that. And if that was, that was a misunderstanding. Either way, I took no steps to be a part of it," she said.

She went on to say that she tried to make sure Britney had "the contacts to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship and just end this for our family. If it's going to cause this much discord, why not end it?"

"If she wanted to talk to other people, then I did it. I set that up. I even spoke to her previous legal team and that did not end well in my favour. I did take the steps to help. But how many times can I take the steps without, you know, she has to walk through the door," Jamie Lynn added.

She then welled up with tears when she added, “That love is still there 100%. I love my sister. I've only ever loved and supported her and done what's right by her and she knows that so I don't know why we're in this position right now."

When JL’s interview was announced on GMA, the preview saw a teary-eyed JL proclaim how much she loves her sister, and that might have rubbed many #FreeBritney supporters the wrong way—including Brit herself. The night before Jamie Lynn big inteview, Britney posted a picture of a typewriter on IG, and captioned it, “Shall I start from THE BEGINNING???” suggesting that she will have a rebuttal to the GMA interview (or possibly a book of her own?) all ready to go.

Many fans were also a bit suspicious of the Jamie Lynn appearance.

Last July, Britney wrote a lengthy IG post calling out her family, including Jamie Lynn, for their treatment of her. Referring to a 2017 incident at the Radio Disney Awards, where Jamie Lynn performed a remix of her older sister's songs, Britney wrote, “I don't like that my sister showed up at an awards show and performed MY SONGS to remixes !!!!! My so-called support system hurt me deeply !!!! This conservatorship killed my dreams ... so all I have is hope and hope is the only thing in this world that is very hard to kill ... yet people still try !!!!”

While Britney's 13-year conservatorship was terminated in November, it was revealed that Jamie Lynn was named as the trustee in Britney’s SJB Revocable Trust in 2020, which was amended by Britney’s then-co-conservators in 2018, according to legal documents. In her testimony, Britney accused her father of "conservatorship abuse" and accused her entire family of profiting off of her fortune.

Jamie Lynn's tell-all memoir is set to be released on January 18th.
