Jif recall: How to find the lot code number on your peanut butter jar

Jif’s parent company, The J.M. Smucker Company, has issued a nationwide recall on its peanut butter products.

Given it’s such a popular household item, many people have been checking their peanut butter jars, and there is some confusion around how to actually figure out if one needs to be tossed.

The advisory says to check for the “lot code number” to see if you have a jar that is part of the recall. (The entire list of recalled products can be found here.)

Here’s how to find the lot code number on a Jif peanut butter jar:

First, look for the “Best if used by” date. There should be a set of numbers called the lot code that can be found on the back of the jar label, below the “if used by” date.

It’s the first seven digits that matter, even if the actual number on the jar is longer.

If the first seven numbers end with “425,” then you have a jar that is part of the recall. The “425″ is the lot code for the Lexington facility where the bad products came from.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency which is working with Jif on the recall, the lot code numbers on the recalled products are 1274425 through 2140425.

The FDA recommends that if you have a peanut butter jar with one of these lot codes, you should discard the product and wash and sanitize anything that has come into contact with the affected product.

Consumers who have questions about the recall or would like to report illnesses should go on Jif’s website or call the company at 800-828-9980 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
