The 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards was a star-studded affair and fans were stunned by the electric performance given by rapper Tobe Nwigwe and his wife, Fat.

The BET Hip Hop Awards aired on October 5th and thousands of viewers tuned in to watch their favourite artists grace the red carpet. The award night saw many distinguished artists like Tyler: The Creator take home the prestigious award.

However, it was Tobe who caught many eyes by the end of the show.

While Tobe, whose full name is Tobechukwu Dubem Nwigwe, has a dedicated fan following already, the rapper is still relatively new to the music scene.

The Nigerian-American rapper is a Houston, Texas native. The singer is known for having a unique sense of style, both personal and musical.

The 34-year-old rapper is also strongly attached to Nigerian culture as he hails from the country’s Igbo ethnic group. At the time of writing, Tobe is signed to ETA records and has been making music since 2016.

In his teen years, Tobe had ambitions of becoming an NFL player. He played high school and college football at the University of North Texas. The rapper was also being considered for an NFL draft.

However, it was an unfortunate ligament tear that changed the rapper’s fate. Unable to play football, he started looking for his passion in other areas. After working with a nonprofit named TeamGINI for a while, he tried his luck with music.

Tobe rose to popularity by posting his original songs on his YouTube and Instagram handles. He often collaborates with his wife Martika Ivory Rogers, aka Fat, to make music.

Some of the rapper’s most popular songs are Fye Fye, Try Jesus, Father Figure, SWAY, Wildlings and more. Tobe has released as many as 12 albums with the most recent ones being Cincoriginals and The Pandemic Project (2020).

Although this wasn’t Tobe’s first BET Hip Hop Awards appearance, it was certainly his most remarkable one. The singer, who last graced the award show back in 2018, gave a memorable performance singing his latest single, Fye Fye.

The 34-year-old stepped on the stage in his iconic mint-coloured outfit while his wife, Fat, joined him later during the performance. Tobe certainly made a bold fashion statement with dancers wearing monochromatic attire and masks.

At the peak of his high-energy performance on the BET Hip Hop awards 2021 stage, the rapper’s wife joined him and sang the lines, “Don’t need oracles, I ain’t Morpheus / I am still the young queen, mother, baby, what it do?”

The Hip hop album of the year was bagged by Call Me If You Get Lost by Tyler, The Creator. He beat the likes of Moneybagg Yo, Migos, Megan Thee Stallion, DJ Khaled and others.

The highly anticipated ‘Song of the year’ award was given to “WAP,” Produced by Ayo & Keyz (Cardi B Feat. Megan Thee Stallion).

Lil Baby won the Hip hop artist of the year beating the likes of Cardi B, Drake, J. Cole and Megan Thee Stallion.
