A “powerful and dangerous” winter storm is expected to significantly affect huge swaths of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and New England through Saturday, with snowfall measured in feet in some places, prompting officials to prepare for treacherous travel conditions and the potential for widespread power failures.

Blizzard warnings were posted in Southern Delaware, central and eastern Long Island, Southeastern Connecticut and all of Rhode Island, as well as parts of Eastern Massachusetts and Eastern Maine, the National Weather Service said. States of emergency were declared in at least three states.

In parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, snowfall totals could reach two feet and it is possible that some parts could get more than that, the Weather Service office in Boston said, adding that “travel will be hazardous to near impossible” on Saturday.

The storm will form east of the Carolinas by Friday evening before pushing north over the weekend. Strong winds and coastal flooding in some areas are also possible, the Weather Service said.
