Redmond Police arrest former Seattle Seahawk Richard Sherman

Redmond Police allege former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman crashed into a cement barrier on a State Route 520 off-ramp then fled the scene before trying to break into a family member’s home in Redmond on Wednesday morning.

Sherman, a Maple Valley resident, was booked into jail at about 6 a.m.

In a news release late Wednesday morning, Redmond police confirmed Sherman’s arrest and said the King County Sheriff’s Office first advised them that Sherman was “possibly traveling to Redmond” shortly before 11:30 p.m. A few minutes before 2 a.m., police said, a 911 caller complained that a family member, identified as Sherman, was trying to break into their home.

When police arrived, officers said, they found Sherman outside the Redmond home, where they allege he fought with them while they were taking him into custody and that a K-9 was “deployed to assist in gaining control.”

Sherman is listed in the King County jail roster as booked on suspicion of burglary domestic violence, but he has yet to be formally charged.

A spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office confirmed Sherman’s status Wednesday and said a first court appearance was likely to take place around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. At the hearing, prosecutors will file a determination of probable cause, outlining the allegations, and a judge will set bail.

Sherman, 33, played seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He is now listed as a free agent.

Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe will hold a news conference at the Redmond Public Safety Building, beginning at 1 p.m.
