After rumors swirled over the weekend about possible wedding bells for Sean Penn, the actor confirmed Monday he has officially tied the knot for the third time.

In an appearance Monday night on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," the actor, 59, confirmed to Meyers he had gotten married Thursday with a simple raise of his left hand to show off his new gold wedding band.

Multiple outlets including People and The Daily Mail reported over the weekend that Penn married Leila George, a 28-year-old actress and philanthropist, citing since-deleted social media posts from friends congratulating the couple.

"We did a COVID wedding," Penn explained to Meyers. "By that I mean it was a county commissioner on Zoom and we were at the house with my two children and her brother, and we did it that way.

"Let's say there are socially-liberating factors under COVID," he added after the late night television host joked it sounded nice to have such a limited guest list.

USA TODAY has reached out to Penn's representatives for more information.

Penn and George, who made their red carpet debut together in 2016, have both been silent on social media since the wedding. George last shared a photo with the actor in March, where they held hands at a charity event raising money to protect animals endangered by a Los Angeles freeway. She's also been active with Penn's nonprofit, Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), according to her Instagram.

Penn was previously married to Madonna for four years beginning in 1985 and Robin Wright, also for four years, beginning in 1996. He and Wright share two children: Dylan, 29, and Hopper, 26.

George, an Australian-American actress, is the daughter of actor/producer Vincent D'Onofrio and actress Greta Scacchi. This is her first marriage.
