Stacey Abrams Predicts Democrat Victory in Georgia: “We’re Ready to Get It Done”

“I think we’re ready to get it done,” Abrams said. “I’d put my money on blue.”

The closely watched Tuesday runoffs see incumbent Republican senator Kelly Loeffler facing off against Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock, and Republican senator David Perdue facing off against Democrat Jon Ossoff. The races will determine which party has control of the Senate when President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20. More than 3 million people cast their ballots ahead of Tuesday’s elections.

Abrams, a voting rights champion who is credited with flipping Georgia blue in the 2020 election, remarked on the huge turnout in her chat with Colbert, noting how “energized” the Democratic base has become. “People want COVID relief,” she said. “They want good jobs, they want access to justice, and they want Joe Biden to have a partner, not an obstructionist.”

Colbert also couldn’t resist asking Abrams about Donald Trump’s desperate, unhinged call with Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger, pressuring him to “find” nonexistent votes to help him overturn the results of the election. Abrams listened to the call, she told Colbert, and didn’t care much that Trump frustratedly mentioned her and insulted her, claiming that she was “laughing” at Raffensperger and his cohort. “Could you characterize the laugh?” Colbert quipped. “Is it a giggle? […] How are you laughing at them?”

“I think it’s a bit of an overstatement to assume I’m thinking about them,” Abrams responded. (Somewhere out there a shiver just went through Michael Ginsberg’s spine.) “I’m focusing on winning this election. They are not my issue.”
