Syracuse is 5-0 for the first time since 1987, but the talking point coming out of Saturday night’s 59-0 victory against Wagner is why Dino Babers had his starting offense on the field to open the third quarter after both teams made the exceptional decision to play 10-minute quarters in the second half.

The Orange was ahead, 49-0 at the time. Naturally, disaster struck early when Sean Tucker, the team’s star running back, went down with an injury and was evaluated on the sideline.

Tucker had already put in a career night’s work with more than 200 rushing yards and three touchdowns at the time of his injury.

LeQuint Allen, Tucker’s back-up, showed more than capable of handling the load much sooner. He scored on an 8-yard touchdown after Tucker left the game, then ripped off a 90-yard run later in the third quarter.

Quarterback Garrett was a perfect 17-for-17 for 238 yards and three total touchdowns (two pass, one rush).

The Orange is off next week before hosting North Carolina State on Oct. 15.

Syracuse will look to run the remaining time off here. Wellington remains in the game at slot receiver before coming off for another walk-on, Sam Warren.

Price picks up the first down.

Syracuse will take a knee and move to 5-0 on the season.

Walk-on linebacker Ryan Dolan among those in the game for the Orange defense.

Field cornerback Quan Peterson in the game, with Wilson the boundary corner.

Yosuke Sugano, a native of Akashi, Japan, comes on here for the third-down snap.

Juwaun Price can’t find the end zone, and Andre Szmyt will tack on a field goal.

Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is in the game at quarterback.

Allen nearly takes it the distance. He rips off a 91-yard run down to the 6-yard line as the third quarter comes to a close.

Wagner gets to midfield but then goes backward for 3 yards. The Seahawks have not advanced the ball past midfield tonight. They have 44 yards on 33 plays to this point.

Freshman linebacker Kadin Bailey getting some run here late in the third quarter.

On 3rd-and-15, Wagner gets flagged for holding. SU will decline the penalty, and Wagner will punt.

After Tucker’s early exit, have to think Babers just wants to go home.

Dino Babers is going to hear about this one postgame.

Sean Tucker takes a hit and stays down after the play. Medical staff and Babers is out to check on him. He’s down for a few minutes before popping up and walking off the field under his own power before going inside the medical tent.

Hard to see what happened, but Tucker’s night is likely done.

LeQuint Allen shows he’s just as capable, capping the opening series of the second half with an 8-yard touchdown run.

Justin Barron is in to hold the extra point.

They will play 10-minute quarters here in the second half. Both coaches agreed to the format change, according to SU.

Rob Hanna is ejected for targeting. Syracuse can appeal like it did with Barron’s targeting call last week, but as it stands now, Hanna won’t be available for the first half against North Carolina State.

Garrett Shrader went 14-for-14 for 200 yards; Sean Tucker went for a career-high 227 yards, and the two combined for six touchdowns in the opening half.

Duce Chestnut’s pick-six accounts for the 49-point margin at the midway point of a game Syracuse was favored to win by 54.5 points.

It is well on its way.

Or maybe he wants to get Tucker up to 200 yards on the day before playing the back-ups in the second half.

Tucker is up to a career-high 227 yards tonight, besting the 207 he put up last season against Boston College.

Babers will let the half expire.

Babers calls timeout with 1:27 remaining in the half after a third-down stop with his team ahead, 49-0.

Orange will practice some situational ball here when it takes over at its own 30-yard line with 1:20 remaining in the half.

Garrett Shrader remains in the game. Tucker getting loose on this drive for runs of 7 and 21 yards. He’s up to 165 yards on 16 carries with more to come.

D’Marcus Adams in the game and seals the block on the perimeter to give Tucker a path to the end zone.

Syracuse (Tucker) goes 41 yards in four plays.

Tucker is up to 183 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries (10.2 yards per carrry).

Wagner takes a deep shot down the visitors’ sideline. Wilson is in coverage to bring up another 3rd-and-long.

Linton records his second sack of the half.

Jeremiah Wilson in at boundary corner. Garrett Williams to the bench. Duce Chesnut at field corner.

Freshman defensive lineman Denis Jaquez is down with 6:50 remaining in the first half. Babers and the training staff have been out to check on him. Jaquez comes off with a cast on his right arm and is being escorted to the locker room.

On the next play, Chestnut records a pick-six. Sub-zero gets flagged for unsportsman-like conduct, rubbing his arms as if he’s shivering and needs to warm up.

Oronde Gadsden steps out of a tackle, then stops on a dime to force another missed tackle.

On the next play, Sean Tucker powers through a defender. Orange showing off here on its fifth possession of the half.

A holding penalty backs the offense up to the 22-yard line.

Of course, it does not matter.

Shrader flips one out to Devaughn Cooper on a drag route. He runs it in from 22 yards out.

Shrader is 13-for-13 for 191 yards and three touchdowns (two pass, one rush).

Sean Tucker is up to a season-high 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Seven different receivers have caught a pass.

Austin Roon, Leon Lowery and Bralyn Oliver (rover) in the game defensively for the Orange.

Wagner goes three-and-out, with Wax coming up for the tackle.

The Seahawks send on the punter for the fourth time in as many drives.

Bergeron is back in the lineup. SU’s offensive line is the same as the one that started the game. Shrader has completed his first 10 passes on the night.

On the next snap, Tucker takes it in from 31 yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the half, but it will be called back on an illegal block in the back. The crowd does NOT like the call.

Umari Hatcher in the game on 3rd-and-8 from the 16-yard line. Shrader looks his way and lobs one up to him in single-man coverage. Hatcher’s first career catch goes for his first career touchdown.

And, the 16-yard touchdown keeps Shrader perfect on the night: 11-for-11 on 137 yards and two total touchdowns (one pass, one rush).

Wagner drive start 0:48 (first quarter) at own 25-yard line

Steve Linton, Denis Jaquez, Ja’Had Carter and Isaiah Johnson getting some snaps here.

Jaquez and Linton combine for the third-down sack to bring on the Wagner punter for a third time on three drives.

Wagner picks up its second first down and lets the opening quarter run out.

Chris Bleich comes in for Dakota Davis at right guard on this drive, and Shrader remains perfect for the quarter with back-to-back completions to Courtney Jackson and Damien Alford to move SU into the red zone for the second time.

Syracuse goes for it on 4th-and-1, and Tucker gets enough to set up 1st-and-goal (but not much more). Left tackle Matthew Bergeron is a little shaken up on the play. Trainers out to assess. He limps off the field.

Cruz shifts to left tackle. Bleich is in at right guard, and Davis goes back to tackle.

Tucker gets his second rushing touchdown of the quarter.

Caleb Okechukwu with his first sack of the night on the Seahawks’ first snap of the drive. Okechukwu comes up with another stop to bring up 3rd-and-long.

Wagner backs up another 5 yards on the false start.

On 3rd-and-18, Kraft is flushed from the pocket by Okechukwu. He’s been all over it this drive.

Wagner will punt for the second time in as many drives.

Enrique Cruz in at right tackle on this drive. Dakota Davis bumps over to right guard. Rest of the offensive line remains unchanged from the first drive.

Tucker, gone in a flash, takes it 60 yards for his third rushing touchdown of the season.

From the stats and information department at SU: Tucker is up to 2,504 career yards. He passed Damien Rhodes (2,461) and moved into 11th on the school’s all-time list.

Alijah Clark starts at boundary safety, with Eric Coley at rover and Jason Simmons Jr. at field safety.

Wagner converts on 3rd-and-short to move the sticks early in the drive.

The Seahawks do not have as much success on its second third-down situation. Ryan Kraft scrambles and falls a couple yards short of the first-down marker. Wagner will punt for the first time tonight.

Syracuse wins the coin toss and quickly moves the ball down the field.

Garrett Shrader completed his first three passes to set up the Orange inside the 10-yard line.

Sean Tucker then comes close to crossing the goal line. SU prematurely blares the touchdown horn; the special teams unit started running on the field before being waved off.

Tucker is then stopped for no gain on 2nd-and-goal.

Shrader then fakes the give to Tucker and scores from a yard out.

Syracuse has taken the field for pregame warm-ups. At first glance, the safety group looks like it’s in a good place after a few guys did not finish last week’s win vs. Virginia.

Ja’Had Carter and Alijah Clark were dressed for pregame. Derek McDonald will be a scratch for the second-straight week. Defensive lineman Chase Simmons will not play. He’s watching his unit go through drills with a crutch under his right arm.

Quarterback Garrett Shrader had no noticeable wrap or brace on his ankle after having one on earlier in the week.

It’s been said on here before but is worth repeating. Watching the ball come out of Carlos Del Rio-Wilson’s hand just looks different.

We should get a long look at the back-up quarterback tonight. There’s no higher point spread on record in SU’s history.

Tonight’s game is expected to draw the smallest crowd of the season. It’s a gorgeous evening in Central New York, and a lower-subdivision opponent riding a 23-game losing streak isn’t much of a draw.
