Tornado watch for central Ohio until 11 p.m.; flash flood watch until noon Saturday

A tornado watch has been issued until 11 p.m. Friday and a flash flood watch until noon Saturday for about two dozen Ohio counties, including several in central Ohio.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington Ohio, a storm front with scattered severe thunderstorms and strong winds is moving in from Indiana, where at least one tornado was reported.

"For this watch, a few tornados are likely, scattered damaging winds and wind gusts and isolated, significant gusts up to 80 miles per hour likely," said NWS Wilmington meteorologist Matthew Campbell.

Campbell said scattered hail up to 2 inches in diameter is also possible with these storms, which will bring lightning and are expected to continue into Friday night.

The severe thunderstorm front moving into Mercer and Darke counties in western Ohio led the NWS to switch the tornado watch there to a more serious tornado warning about 5:30 p.m.

Rainfall amounts in some areas could be heavy at times with up to 1 to 2 inches possible in some areas areas. In areas where repeated storms pass through, rainfall amounts of up to 4 inches are possible.

The tornado watch includes Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Licking, Madison, Pickaway and Union counties in central Ohio.

Radar projections indicate the storms may pass south and west of Columbus Friday night. Nevertheless, the Columbus Symphony Popcorn Pop concert scheduled Friday evening at John F. Wolfe Commons Downtown was canceled as a precaution.

As for the video of a tornado touching down in the Hoosier state, Campbell said there will be further investigation over the weekend before NWS Wilmington is able to confirm the sighting.
