USMNT's Weston McKennie out vs. Honduras after violating COVID protocols
U.S. men's national team midfielder Weston McKennie will not travel with the club to Honduras for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier after violating COVID-19 protocols. The team said McKennie will head back to Italy, where he plays with Juventus in Serie A, later on Monday.
"There are high expectations for those who are a part of the U.S. men's national team, and in order to be successful, it's important that everyone in the group is accountable," coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement.
The U.S. will also be without defender Sergiño Dest, who was diagnosed with a right ankle sprain. Dest was injured in the 44th minute of Sunday's 1-1 draw against Canada.
McKennie missed Sunday's match because of the violation as well and apologized in an Instagram post.
"I am sorry for my actions, I will be cheering hard for the boys tonight and hope to be back with the team soon," he wrote.
The U.S. is already without winger Gio Reyna and goalkeeper Zack Steffen.
