West Ham 1-1 Tottenham: London derby spoils split

by 24USATVApril 3, 2024, midnight 22

Tottenham Hotspur scored early for once but gave up the lead and failed to find a second goal in a 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Tuesday.

Spurs had conceded the first goal in five of the previous six Premier League games before scoring in the fifth minute at West Ham. The Irons would level the line and surprisingly not allow another goal despite not keeping a clean sheet since January 2 and allowing 24 goals in the following 10 PL outings.

Brennan Johnson’s early goal was soon canceled out by a Kurt Zouma header, as the London rivals couldn’t quite meet the finishing reputations the rest of the way.

The draw moves Spurs two points back of fourth-place Aston Villa will eight matches remaining for both sides this Premier League season, while West Ham mvoes a point ahead of eighth-place Newcastle. The Irons are three points back Manchester United but have played two more games than the Red Devils.

Derbies can be unpredictable and weird, you know?

It was scrappy, there were chances, and frenetic passages of play didn’t stay far from this one, as Tottenham scored early, West Ham answered, and the Irons countered with vigor over the final hour or so. Spurs were very good out wide but did not get a typical strong game from Heung-min Son, while counterpart Michail Antonio was also quiet. David Moyes also did not make a single sub in the game despite this fixture being sandwiched between weekend outings. The points split was fair despite Spurs control of the ball, as West Ham knows what to do when it’s deprived — or sacrifices — possession.

West Ham go to Wolves at 10am ET Saturday, while Spurs wait til Sunday to host Nottingham Forest for a 1pm kickoff.

Both keepers have a save and both will have regrets over the way their six-yard box looked when the opposition found the back of the goal.

Spurs have had all of the ball but West Ham’s comfortable like that, and it’s all there for both teams in the final 45 minutes.

This is a very even game.

Jarrod Bowen sends a sharp free kick into the six and Guglielmo Vicario’s not sure what to do with it.

Kurt Zouma is, bulling his way to the ball and getting his head to it for the equalizer.

Timo Werner drives the left side and leans to squeeze a pass through the six, as Lukasz Fabianski and the West Ham defense leave an early alley and red-hot Brennan Johnson slots home for the visitors.
