What is Leif Erikson Day?
LEIF Erikson is most famously known for his career as an explorer.
While not much is known about the Icelandic native, every year, Leif Erikson Day is celebrated with a SpongeBob Meme.
Leif Erikson Day is observed annually on October 9 and is meant to honor Erikson, the explorer who led the first Europeans thought to have set foot in continental North America.
He is thought to have explored the continent around 1000 A.D. approximately half a millennium before Christopher Columbus.
Today, there is not much information available on Erikson.
He is said to be the son of Norse explorer Erik Thorvaldsson, known as Erik the Red, and Thjodhild.
Erikson's father is said to have founded the first settlement in Greenland.
It has also been reported that Erikson is the father of Thorkell and Thorgils but not much information is available on them.
According to History.com, Erikson was sailing to Norway from Greenland, and on his way home, he sailed off course and ended up landed on the North American continent, which he called Vinland.
After exploring Vinland, he then returned to Greenland and never went back.
When was Leif Erikson mentioned in SpongeBob?
Nickelodeon's SpongeBob Squarepants celebrates Leif Erikson Day during the "Bubble Buddy" episode which originally aired November 16, 2000.
In the episode, Leif Erikson Day is referred to as SpongeBob's favorite holiday next to April Fool's Day.
Before the episode ends, Bubble Buddy is seen wishing SpongeBob a Happy Leif Erikson Day before drifting off into a bubble taxi.
His best friend Patrick also wishes his buddy a Happy Leif Erikson Day and at the end of the episode.
In honor of the day, SpongeBob dresses up in a Viking helmet and large red beard while saying "hinga-dinga-durgen."
