Yankees land Anthony Rizzo in trade with Cubs in another major deadline splash

TAMPA, Fla. - Anthony Rizzo is headed to the Yankees, in the club’s second major deal for a left-handed slugger to boost their underachieving, heavily right-handed lineup.

And with the acquisition Thursday of Rizzo, a four-time Gold Glove first baseman, Luke Voit might soon be headed elsewhere before Friday's 4 p.m. trade deadline as Yanks attempt to boost their pitching staff.

Hours after the acquisition of Joey Gallo became official in a trade with the Texas Rangers, the Yankees were in agreement with the Chicago Cubs for Rizzo, as first reported by the YES Network's Jack Curry.

Rizzo is slashing .248/.346/.446 this season with 14 home runs and 40 RBI in 92 games (376 plate appearances).

As with the Gallo trade, with four prospects going to Texas, the Yankees are reportedly sending two minor leaguers to the Cubs for Rizzo, who turns 32 on Aug. 8 and will be eligible for free agency after this season.

Before Rizzo:What will the Yankees lineup look with Joey Gallo?

Class A right-hander Alexander Vizcaino and Rookie Level outfielder Kevin Alcantara were headed to the Cubs, as reported by Curry, with Chicago picking up the remainder of Rizzo's contract for 2021, roughly $6 million.

Vizcaino, 24, is rated the Yankees' No. 9 prospect by MLB Pipeline and Alcantara is rated No.

The Yankees remain roughly $4 million under the luxury tax threshold as they seek to add pitching upgrades.

But they've already given a major boost to an offense that was 14th out of the 15 AL clubs in runs scored before being shut out 14-0 Thursday afternoon at Tampa Bay, the Yankees' most lopsided loss in 14 years.

Gallo is expected to be in the Yankees' lineup Friday night as they open a three-game interleague series against the Marlins at Miami.

Voit (left knee inflammation) is currently on the injured list, but the right-handed slugger - who led the majors with 22 homers in last year's 60-game schedule - participated in live batting practice Thursday morning against Luis Severino.

Manager Aaron Boone said he was unsure when Voit might be ready for activation, but he was likely to be ready during the Miami series this weekend.

Now, everything is on hold as the Yankees continue to wheel and deal up to the deadline.

Twins starter Jose Berrios and Rockies starter Jon Gray remain intriguing trade targets, and the Yankees have market competition with their main AL East competitors - the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Rays - for pitching.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman has also engaged the wider market for additional bullpen help, having already added lefty Joely Rodriguez (from Texas) and Clay Holmes (from Pittsburgh) to his relief corps.

An integral part of the Cubs' famous 2016 world championship club, Rizzo has seen an offensive decline following his six-year prime.

From 2014 through 2019, Rizzo averaged .284 with 30 homers and 99 RBI per season, with a .901 OPS and three top-10 NL MVP finishes.

Rizzo’s parents grew up in Lyndhurst, and he often spent summers in North Jersey.
