One Of Billie Eilish’s Most Unlikely Hits Returns

Billie Eilish is preparing to release her third full-length album next month. The singer-songwriter’s Hit Me Hard and Soft is expected to drop on May 17, and it’s sure to give the superstar another huge hit on the Billboard charts. Ahead of that title arriving, one of the Grammy winner’s most unexpected productions makes a surprising comeback.

On this week’s edition of the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, Eilish finds her way back with an unlikely win. The singer’s “Hotline (Edit)” reappears at No. 46 on the ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the U.S. that can be classified as some form of rock or alternative.

For those who don’t know, “Hotline (Edit)” is essentially a cover—of sorts—of Drake’s single “Hotline Bling.” The rapper released the pop/R&B tune in summer 2015, and it would go on to become a huge hit all around the world. The tune narrowly missed out on bringing the superstar back to the summit on the Hot 100, as it peaked in the runner-up rung.

Eilish released her take on the single just a few years after the original. In 2018, she sold it on vinyl as part of Record Store Day, but it wasn’t limited to only that one format for long. Once “Hotline (Edit)” was shared on streaming platforms and digital storefronts, it gave the young talent a chart hit as well.

“Hotline (Edit)” peaked at No. 20 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. Now that it’s back on that ranking, the tune has spent a total of eight frames somewhere on the list.

The same tune has also reached another, similar ranking. “Hotline (Edit)” peaked at No. 15 on the Hot Alternative Songs chart, which is similar to the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs list, but it focuses on just alternative tracks and not rock—though how it’s decided which songs belong where isn’t always clear. The title spent two frames on that tally, but it doesn’t manage to return to that roster this time around.

Eilish’s music is performing well in the U.S. at the moment—better than usual—perhaps as anticipation for her new full-length intensifies. Her two albums are on the rise on a number of Billboard charts, and that trend may continue until Hit Me Hard and Soft arrives.
